Senior Minister of State for Finance and Transport, Mrs Josephine Teo joined the kick-off to the series of Pre-Budget dialogue sessions organised by REACH. This particular dialogue session was targeted to receive suggestions for Budget 2014. Participants listened to one another, discussed ideas and shared their concerns and opinions regarding the upcoming Budget 2014.

SMS Josephine Teo asked that the community continue giving feedback to the Government, as this was necessary and important in highlighting issues of concern, which would enable the Government to serve the public in the best way possible.

Senior Minister of State for Health and Manpower and REACH Chairman Dr Amy Khor gives a concluding speech to summarise the Pre-Budget 2014 Conversation held on 28 Nov 2013, jointly organised by REACH and the Ministry of Finance (MOF).

SMS Khor encouraged participants to continue providing feedback leading up to Budget 2014 to allow the Government to implement pertinent and efficacious policies for a better Singapore.

Mr Majid Ariff is a former National Football player and is considered to be one of the most talented footballers in Singapore. Mr Fandi Ahmad was one of Mr Majid’s protégés, and Mr Majid still remains an inspiration for young football players.

John Morrice’s story
John Morrice’s story (01m40s)
COL (Ret) John Morrice had an illustrious career in the Armed Forces. He was involved in protecting Malaysia during Konfrontasi and continued to serve the Force Malayan Infantry Brigade subsequently. He was instrumental in building up the SAF to what it is today and even served as the Commander of the very first batch of National Servicemen.

Koh Lian Huat’s story

Mr Koh is currently serving as the Vice-Chairman of the Tampines East CCC. He started as a grassroots volunteer with Teck Hong Village CC and helped the residents of his kampong move into HDB estates. He also helped raised funds to build the Tampines Chinese Temple. Mr Koh has been involved in the grassroots for over 40 years now and still goes to the Tampines Chinese Temple to visit his old friends from his kampong days.

Thiayagarajah S/O Karthigesu’s story
Thiayagarajah S/O Karthigesu’s story (01m55s)
Mr Thiayagarajah worked as a Public Health Inspector for 38 years. He was part of the team that developed the licensing system for hawkers, and worked on shifting street hawkers into proper hawker centres. Mr Thiayagarajah has also been a grassroots leader for 33 years. Mr Thiayagarajah and his wife found satisfaction in helping the community and still continue to serve today, conducting exercise classes and dance classes for the elderly in their community.

A washerlady who singlehandedly raised a family
A washerlady who singlehandedly raised a family (02m00s)
Mdm Tam's youngest child was only 3 years old when her husband died in 1974 from a heart attack. She brought up her four children singlehandedly working as a washerlady. Today, she lives with her son and spends most of her time with her grandchildren. She is relatively healthy for a 83-year-old, and visits her family clinic regularly to manage her high blood pressure. With the Pioneer Generation Package, Mdm Tam will not have to worry about depending on her children for her medical bills.

A storekeeper who braved SARS
A storekeeper who braved SARS (02m10s)
72-year-old Mdm Timah Bte Haji Abdul Rashid has been working at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital as a storekeeper for close to 20 years. In her course of duty, she went through the SARS crisis in 2003 and H1N1 outbreak in 2009. Mdm Timah suffers from diabetes and requires daily medication. She does worry about future healthcare costs. When the Pioneer Generation Package rolls in, Mdm Timah will enjoy substantial medical benefits that can help ease her worries.

A retiree who takes care of his mother
A retiree who takes care of his mother (02m10s)
75-year-old Selvaraju Ramachandran is a retiree who currently lives with his 91-year-old wheelchair-bound mother. She suffers from high blood pressure and diabetes. Mr Selvaraju himself underwent a heart surgery in 1994 and goes for regular check-ups. With the various medical benefits, the Pioneer Generation Package can help to ease Mr Selvaraju's burden when it rolls out this July.
